Maine’s Downeast coast road trip runs approximately 320 miles from Portland to Lubec along US-1 and ME-3, with a total driving time of roughly 6.5–8 hours spread over 4–5 days. This is the most rewarding stretch of the New England coast that most drivers skip — raw, uncommercial, and genuinely remote by the time you reach Washington County.

Most summer road-trippers turn around at Bar Harbor. That’s understandable — Acadia National Park is a legitimate draw — but the coast east of Ellsworth is where Maine stops performing and starts being itself. Fishing villages with no boutique hotels, tidal flats that drop 20 feet at low tide, and a two-lane US-1 that occasionally forgets guardrails exist. This guide covers the full run.

Who This Route Is For

  • Ideal for couples and solo drivers who want scenery without theme-park crowds
  • Good for tent campers and cabin renters — campgrounds are plentiful and inexpensive east of Ellsworth
  • Not recommended for RVs over 32 feet — the Downeast section of US-1 includes narrow bridge crossings and limited turnaround options in village centers
  • Not the right trip if you need consistent cell coverage — Washington County has genuine dead zones; download offline maps before you leave Ellsworth

Stop 1: Portland, ME

Start in Portland’s Old Port district and fuel up — literally. Gas prices climb noticeably once you pass Ellsworth, so top off here. For breakfast before departure, Becky’s Diner on Hobson’s Wharf has been feeding fishermen and road-trippers since 1991; the blueberry pancakes are the right call. From Portland, take US-1 North through Brunswick and Bath. The Sagadahoc Bridge over the Kennebec River in Bath gives you a first look at serious tidal water. Budget 30 minutes for a walk through Bath’s downtown if you have time — the Maine Maritime Museum sits right on the river.

Stop 2: Rockland, ME

(Approx. 1 hour 20 minutes from Portland, ~80 miles via US-1)

Rockland is a working harbor town that has added a genuine arts scene without losing its edge. The Farnsworth Art Museum holds one of the most significant collections of American realist painting in the country — the Wyeth holdings alone justify a stop. For lunch, try Primo Restaurant if you’re visiting mid-trip and want a proper meal, or grab a lobster roll from Red’s Eats in nearby Wiscasset on your way up (it’s on US-1, you’ll pass it — the line is real but moves). The Owls Head Transportation Museum, 3 miles south of Rockland on ME-73, is worth 90 minutes if you travel with kids or have any interest in early aviation.

Seasonal note: The North Atlantic Lobster Festival runs in Rockland in late July/early August. It draws large crowds and fills lodging within 30 miles — book well ahead if your dates overlap.

Stop 3: Bar Harbor, ME

(Approx. 2 hours from Rockland, ~75 miles via US-1 to ME-3)

Take US-1 North to ME-3 East at Ellsworth and follow ME-3 onto Mount Desert Island. Bar Harbor is the obvious anchor stop for Acadia National Park (Acadia National Park Loop Road). In summer 2026, the park continues to require timed-entry reservations for the Cadillac Mountain Summit Road and several trailhead parking areas — reserve at recreation.gov before you leave home, not the morning of. The park’s Jordan Pond House is the only in-park restaurant and serves its famous popovers; it’s worth the wait for a table on the lawn.

Gas up in Ellsworth before crossing onto Mount Desert Island. Fuel on the island is available but runs 20–30 cents per gallon higher. Fill your tank in Ellsworth on ME-3.

Stop 4: Ellsworth, ME

(Day-trip return from Bar Harbor, ~30 minutes back on ME-3, ~18 miles)

Ellsworth functions as the supply hub for everything east of Acadia. If you need groceries, a hardware store, or a reliable mechanic before heading Downeast, this is your last comfortable stop for all three. Stock the cooler here. The Ellsworth Walmart and Hannaford supermarket on High Street are your practical friends. Ellsworth is also where US-1 reasserts itself as your primary road heading east — follow it toward Machias.

Stop 5: Machias, ME

(Approx. 1 hour 45 minutes from Ellsworth, ~85 miles via US-1)

Machias (pronounced muh-CHY-us) sits at the tidal mouth of the Machias River and is the de facto capital of Washington County. It’s small — about 2,300 people — but has a motel, a diner, and the Helen’s Restaurant on East Main Street, which has been serving wild blueberry pie since 1950. Order the pie. Nearby Jasper Beach in Howard Cove (8 miles south on ME-92) is a pocket beach made entirely of smooth rhyolite and jasper stones — no sand, no lifeguard, no entrance fee. It’s unlike any other beach on the East Coast.

Seasonal hazard: US-1 between Ellsworth and Machias has several sections under rolling construction in summer 2026. Expect 15–20 minute delays at flagging operations, particularly near Harrington. Leave buffer time.

Stop 6: Lubec, ME

(Approx. 45 minutes from Machias, ~28 miles via US-1 and ME-189)

Lubec is the easternmost incorporated town in the continental United States, and West Quoddy Head State Park at the tip of ME-189 holds the easternmost point of land. The candy-striped West Quoddy Head Light is the most photographed lighthouse in Maine for good reason — it marks the spot where the US meets the Bay of Fundy, where tidal swings exceed 20 feet. Arrive at low tide and walk the Bold Coast Trail along the cliffs. The Campobello Island International Bridge connects Lubec to New Brunswick, Canada — bring a valid passport if you want to visit Roosevelt Campobello International Park across the border (no fee, but customs applies in both directions).

FAQ

How long does it take to drive from Portland, ME to Lubec, ME?

The direct drive on US-1 is approximately 320 miles and takes 6.5–8 hours without stops. Most drivers spread this over 4–5 days to allow time at Acadia National Park and the Downeast coast.

Is US-1 in Downeast Maine suitable for RVs?

US-1 is paved and maintained throughout, but Washington County sections include narrow village streets, low-clearance bridges, and limited pull-off space. We recommend RVs stay under 32 feet and check bridge weight limits before departing Ellsworth.

Do you need a reservation to enter Acadia National Park in summer 2026?

Yes. Timed-entry reservations are required for Cadillac Mountain Summit Road and several popular trailhead parking areas from late May through October. Book at recreation.gov; same-day availability is extremely limited in July and August.

When is the best time to visit Lubec and West Quoddy Head?

Mid-June through mid-September offers the most reliable weather. Fog is common any time of year — mornings are foggier than afternoons. Check tide tables before visiting; low tide exposes the dramatic rock shelves along the Bold Coast Trail.

Are there gas stations between Ellsworth and Machias?

Yes, there are small stations in towns like Harrington and Jonesboro, but hours can be limited and prices are higher than in Ellsworth. Fill your tank fully in Ellsworth before heading east on US-1.

Is a passport required to visit Campobello Island from Lubec?

Yes. Campobello Island is in New Brunswick, Canada. A valid US passport (or passport card) is required to cross the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Bridge from Lubec. Canadian customs processes entry; US customs processes your return.
