Brunswick & Harpswell Neck (Stop 2)
30 minutes north of Portland on US-1 (28 miles). Brunswick is where US-1 starts to feel genuinely coastal rather than suburban. Detour south on ME-123 and ME-24 to reach Harpswell Neck — a 20-minute side trip that puts you on a narrow peninsula with lobster pounds directly on the water. Morse’s Cribstone Bridge, connecting Bailey Island, is one of the few open-crib granite bridges still in use in the country. Get a boiled lobster at Cook’s Lobster & Ale House on Bailey Island before returning to US-1.
Rockland, ME (Stop 3)
1 hour 10 minutes from Brunswick on US-1 (58 miles). Rockland is a working fishing port with a serious arts scene built around the Farnsworth Art Museum (Wyeth collection). The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is a 4.3-mile round-trip walk on a granite jetty — flat, exposed, and worth every step on a clear August day. Belfast, ME (Stop 4)
45 minutes north of Rockland on US-1 (38 miles). Belfast is compact, walkable, and underrated. The harbor front along the Passagassawakeag River has a mix of independent coffee shops and chandleries that feel authentic rather than curated. Grab coffee at Rollie’s Bar & Grill or the nearby Penobscot Bay Provisioners. Belfast is also the last reliable spot for a sit-down meal before Machias — stock up on snacks and top off the tank at the Irving station on US-1 before heading east.
Ellsworth, ME (Stop 5)
55 minutes from Belfast on US-1 (48 miles). Ellsworth is the commercial hub for all of Downeast Maine — the last Walmart, the last Target, and the last reliable fast-food corridor before the route gets genuinely remote. If you need anything (camping supplies, a phone charger, extra water), get it here. Ellsworth sits at the junction of US-1 and ME-3 (the road to Bar Harbor); ignore the Bar Harbor turnoff and stay on US-1 East. Machias, ME (Stop 6)
1 hour 20 minutes from Ellsworth on US-1 (68 miles). The highway east of Ellsworth is two lanes, heavily forested, and largely free of traffic — this is the Maine most people never see. Machias sits on the Machias River and hosts the Wild Blueberry Festival every third weekend of August (August 21–23, 2026 — check dates before you go, as this coincides with your travel window and brings significant local traffic). Stop at Helen’s Restaurant on Main Street, a Machias institution since 1950, for blueberry pie that is as good as the regional reputation suggests. Fill up at the Citgo on Court Street — it’s the last reliable gas before Lubec (27 miles).
Quoddy Head State Park (Stop 7)
45 minutes from Machias on US-1 and US-189 (27 miles). US-189 branches off US-1 at Whiting and leads directly into Lubec, the easternmost town in the contiguous United States. West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, with its distinctive red-and-white candy-cane stripes, marks the easternmost point. The park has 4.5 miles of coastal trails along the Bold Coast cliffs, and on clear mornings you can see New Brunswick, Canada, across the Quoddy Narrows.
